Episode 25: Phantom of the Paradise

In this episode, we talk about the 1974 cult film favorite, Phantom of the Paradise!  It’s part Phantom of the Opera, part Faust with a liberal sprinkling of a bunch of other literary references all tied up in a really great Paul Williams soundtrack.  Despite our initial reactions, it’s also a film that grows on you and while the music isn’t something you might remember the words to, you’ll be singing it for weeks to come.

Episode 24: Tampopo

In this episode, we take a trip to Japan for the “ramen western” Tampopo!  We spend most of the episode talking about food, food, food and also food.  Food is really important – both at the core of this movie and also, as a pro tip for anyone watching this movie (get some snacks).  Grab some noodles and let’s discuss the story of Tampopo and her ramen shop!

Episode 23: Rhinestone

In this episode, we discuss Rhinestone, a 1984 big budget flop starring Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton!  It’s your basic My Fair Lady story except instead of turning a guttersnipe into a fancy lady, Dolly Parton is tasked with turning a talent-less NY cabbie into a country western singer.  SPOILER: Stallone can’t sing. AT ALL.  We watched this so you didn’t have to.

Episode 22: Repo Man

In this episode, we discuss the 1984 cult film favorite, Repo Man! What’s in the trunk of that Chevy Malibu? We’re not sure, but it might be a plate of shrimp, generic beer, aliens, a time machine or a whole mess of radiation. Or all of those plus a great punk soundtrack. Let’s figure it out together, shall we?
