Episode 100: Snowpiercer

We celebrate our 100th episode by finally tackling Megan’s white whale… Snowpiercer!  It’s a special gift to us on this Cinema Supercollider milestone that we will never, ever, ever have to watch this rage inducing piece of filmmaking again.

  1. I’m not familiar with the graphic novel, but as far as the movie is concerned, it is *absolutely nothing but* an allegory. There is no way to graft the story onto anything approximating a physical train in a physical world. When analyzing the movie, the best way to look at it is to consider it a dream. Pure symbolism to make points about society. That’s all.

    • True, and we’re usually more than willing to suspend our disbelief when it comes to movie magic. I (Megan) typically love getting punched in the face with symbolism – one of my favorite films is Pleasantville, which cannot do this more than it does, you even see the wind up and follow through coming as the punch lands. I think the thing that bugs us most about the film is that the points that it is trying to make about society come off as hollow and undeserved. Those points are treated much better in the graphic novel, because it has time (and words) to show and tell us about them and offer us a more reasonable palette of paints to see the picture come to life in.

It’s also one of the films that no matter how much we think about it or discuss it, we’ll always be at odds with folks who like it and see value it in… It’s our White Whale.

    • Sadly, we weren’t able to make it. But we did a special double feature episode of B-Fest films this week in honor of the event!
